Expert Tips for Brushing your Dog’s Teeth at Home

Experts share essential tips for brushing dogs’ teeth

Veterinarians have highlighted the importance of dental hygiene for pets’ overall health and well-being. Ignoring oral care can lead to issues like bad breath, tooth decay and even gum disease in dogs. In an Instagram post, veterinarian Dr. Charlie Astle outlined some simple techniques for brushing canine teeth at home. For nervous pups, starting young is best while giving treats and praise.

Astle advised holding smaller dogs securely on the lap and letting bigger ones sit calmly beside them for easy access to the mouth. Owners can gently rub their teeth using a finger or cloth to get their pets used to the motion.

Once comfortable, a tiny amount of pet-safe paste tested on the finger can familiarise dogs with the taste. Soon, a small brush can be introduced, taking time with positive reinforcement.

Experts recommend thrice weekly brushing long-term to remove plaque building up as tartar. Specialised brushes are designed for angles and reach all tooth surfaces, making them accessible.

These kinds of toothpaste are strictly avoided due to the risks of high salt, artificial sweeteners, or other ingredients when swallowed. Store-bought pastes made for pets are considered safer alternatives.

While a troublesome process initially, regular oral care helps canine companions enjoy better breath and stronger teeth in the long run. Adhering to professional guidelines makes it a stress-free routine.
