Gracie Abrams opens up about love ahead of Valentine’s day

American singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams recently shared heartfelt insights into her love life, just in time for Valentine’s Day. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, the artist behind “This Is What It Feels Like” opened up about her past relationships, unexpected romantic encounters, and her thoughts on love.

Abrams has an uncommon take on Valentine’s Day. “All of my songs are love letters in one way or another, so that’s my Valentine,” she said, adding work is keeping her busy but not exactly closing her heart to love. “What I love about a healthy relationship is that your life doesn’t radically change. You just fit into each other in a way that feels positively challenging and deeply supportive; it’s like a place to land,” she shared.

When reflecting on the first instance of love she ever experienced, her high school days were certainly days of high feeling. “I was an idiot,” she recalled, reflecting on the obsessive nature of young love and how such emotions served as inspiration.

“I loved everything about him. I felt so inspired and motivated by him, and he was my best friend. It was real love.” Abrams also spoke of a recent romantic incident saying, “I made out with this cute boy at a bar after one of my New York shows.”

This is where it gets personal because the singer, afterward, teased about her present romantic life with speculations associated with her love affair with an Irish actor Paul Mescal:. The two have kept fans talking since summer 2024, having made their first public appearance together this November.

But without confirming such rumors, Abrams reflected on the evolution of her perspective on intimacy. “I’ve only more recently become proud of my sex life,” she said, counting this growth among relationships in which she is seen and respected.

I will, until I die, write about feeling rejected if I don’t get a text back within five seconds of sending one,” said Abrams, 25, an emotional songwriter. “But I do actually feel quite secure in my romantic attachments. The bar is really high in my relationships.

Her new single “That’s So True,” peaking at Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, is a gut-wrenching ballad about a past relationship. For all of “That’s So True”‘s themes and messages, Abrams is ultimately optimistic about love. “I don’t date people who make me feel like that. I would rather be single for the rest of my life than feel uneasy in a relationship,” she said, punctuating her commitment to finding authentic connection.
