The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern caution as temperatures continue to soar in several states, revealing that heatwave conditions are expected to grip the nation during April and May. Dr. Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist at IMD, shared insights, stating that temperatures are likely to surpass the normal range, with the national capital also anticipated to witness sporadic light rainfall in the coming days.
“As we approach April, we anticipate temperatures above the normal range. Heatwave conditions are projected to prevail over the central part of the country during April,” Dr. Kumar explained.
He added, “May, the warmest month, is expected to bring heat waves to northwest and central India.” Furthermore, Dr. Kumar revealed a long-term forecast indicating abnormal temperatures and the likelihood of continued heatwave conditions across the central region for the next two to three months.
Notably, the IMD senior scientist also shed light on a prevailing weather system known as the Western disturbance, which is set to impact Northwest India starting today. “Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh may witness heavy rainfall, while the surrounding plains can expect light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorm and even hailstorm activity,” Dr. Kumar stated.
The forecast for Delhi-NCR includes the possibility of light rain. “Currently, northwest India is experiencing abnormal temperatures. However, with the influence of the Western disturbances, the temperature is expected to decline gradually, providing some relief. Nevertheless, as it is the summer season, temperatures will likely remain above 35 degrees Celsius in Northwest India,” the official added.
In addition, Dr. Kumar highlighted ongoing heat wave conditions in Maharashtra and its neighboring areas. He noted that Madhya Pradesh will witness such conditions for the next two days while dry weather persists over central India.
The IMD official also mentioned that certain parts of Karnataka will experience heat waves in the coming days. Additionally, hot and humid conditions are predicted for Kerala, Tamil Nadu, coastal Odisha, and coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next four to five days.
As the mercury continues to rise and heat wave conditions loom, it is advised that residents in the affected regions take necessary precautions to ensure their well-being and combat the sweltering heat.
