Adult acne, a persistent and often frustrating skin condition, can arise from various triggers, including hormonal imbalances, stress, and lifestyle choices. It’s a concern many grapple with, and recently, a unique approach to managing it has emerged—strength training.

Digital creator and actor Kusha Kapila recently shared insights on how working out, particularly strength training, has positively impacted her skin health. Speaking on a podcast hosted by Mira Kapoor, she remarked on the surprising link between exercise and clearer skin.

“Strength training helps with my acne. If I don’t work out for two weeks, I get a new pimple,” she shared. The issue, she noted, was initially linked to hormonal fluctuations and PCOS, which she discovered after dealing with unexplained breakouts at the age of 29.

Kapila also highlighted the uplifting effect of what she referred to as the “sweat glow,” saying that when other remedies fail, the radiance from regular workouts becomes a transformative boost for her skin.

Dermatologists agree that exercise, particularly strength training, plays a significant role in managing acne. Hormonal imbalances, often a major contributor to adult acne, can be addressed through consistent physical activity, explains Dr. Swetha Sridhar, a dermatologist and assistant professor at Lady Curzon and Bowring Hospital.

Additionally, it improves insulin sensitivity, reducing androgen spikes that can exacerbate acne. Dr. Sridhar also emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise in stabilizing estrogen and progesterone levels, especially during menstrual cycles, to prevent hormonal breakouts.

A study in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology further supports this, finding that consistent exercise improves skin elasticity and reduces inflammatory markers often associated with acne.

Sweating during workouts, while beneficial in some ways, requires proper hygiene to prevent issues. Sweat helps flush out impurities like dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells, which can otherwise clog pores. It also carries dermcidin, a natural antimicrobial peptide that combats acne-causing bacteria.

With the right balance of exercise and skin care, managing adult acne is becoming more attainable, offering both a clear complexion and a healthier lifestyle.
