Paris’ Picasso Museum reopens with fresh exhibition and tribute to Francoise Gilot

Paris’ world-famous Picasso Museum is getting ready to welcome tourists as of today. It has completely renewed and prepared an exciting visit for the visitor. It is the home of Picasso’s biggest collection, making the museum a unique remodeling that takes you to a new level. It pays full and emotional tribute to Francoise Gilot, the famous painter with whom Picasso was once a partner.

The New Museum’s permanent exhibition will include 400 pieces, belonging to the most outstanding 80,000 from its archive, which already contains over 200,000 items. These collections comprise circa 2000 paintings and approximately 11,000 drawings done by the master throughout his artistic career. The exhibition gives the general scope of his career, including iconic workshops in blue and rosy pink, such as proto-cubism, surrealism, collages, and works in ceramics.

What differentiates the Picasso Museum is how we present this journey through art from Picasso’s childhood days until he died in 1973. A devoted segment called the “Laboratory” sheds light on Picasso’s experimental sculptures and draws attention to his unusual works made from unorthodox materials, including cardboard, metal, and wood, not to mention cigar boxes. Walking on, the section explained by the artist himself and put along with the sketches and paintings gives us an inimitable look into Picasso’s creation process.

The next item mentioned is the chapter devoted to the only woman who dated Picasso near his 82nd birthday. Her name is Francoise Gilot. She passed away when she was 101 in June 2023. As an accomplished amateur artist herself, Gilot’s unique work is displayed in renowned institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York. The book she wrote, titled “Living with Picasso” and published in 1965, presents a candid image of Picasso, combining complexity and multi-faceted character traits.

Nevertheless, Gilot refers to Picasso as “ingenious and gifted” rather admiringly, highlighting his extraordinary, captivating voice and sense of humor. As the world travels to different corners to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s passing in 2023, a space for him will be created in the museum’s reopening, a homecoming for the well-known artist.

The exhibition shows Picasso’s artistic influences through works by Matisse and Cezanne, as well as some of the works taken from Africa and Oceania, which he had encompassed in his private collection. Besides the opening, an art center near the gallery is also planned to be launched in the upcoming autumn so that the public can benefit more from the expertise and study derived from Picasso’s enduring masterpieces.
