Saudi Arabia hosts the first fashion show featuring swimwear.
Saudi Arabia achieved a milestone by organising its inaugural fashion show projecting swimsuits, marking a progressive move for the conservative kingdom. Held in Red Sea coastal resort as part of Red Sea Fashion Week, the event exhibited designs by Moroccan label Yasmina Qanzal including one-piece suits with exposed shoulders and midriffs.
Designer Qanzal stated it represented an honor to display elegant Arabian swimwear in the country’s historic first such showcase.
The gala occurred as Saudi Arabia pushed economic reforms under Vision 2030 and social changes, such as allowing public entertainment and gender-mixed events, in a bid to open up to tourism and the world.
Observers noted the kingdom earlier banned women from wearing non-burkas and clamped down on ultra-orthodox police, with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman steering reforms.
Saudi fashion’s USD 12.5 billion contribution and 230,000 jobs indicate growing priorities. Influencers attending lauded the “brave” step and its implications, with the context making it truly remarkable.
As conservative roots recede and modern initiatives emerge across sectors, Saudi Arabia is strategically employing cultural shows to portray evolved norms aligned with its reform charter.
