The mercury breached 47 degrees Celsius again in parts of Delhi as a punishing heatwave shows no signs of relenting. With temperatures soaring to new highs, the IMD issued a red alert for the next five days.
On Monday, Delhi recorded its second hottest day of the season at a scorching 43.6 degrees Celsius. Several areas like Najafgarh topped 47 degrees, shy of Sunday’s all-time high of 47.8 degrees.
With power demand shooting up, the disruptions have pushed the government to direct early summer vacations for schools across the capital from May 11 onwards.
While heatwaves had already forced all Delhi government schools to close, some private schools were still operational. But the recent alert underlining the heat intensity has prompted authorities to reschedule the breaks sooner for student safety.
Areas like Mungeshpur, Aya Nagar, and Pusa simmered over 46 degrees on Monday as residents battled relentless sunshine without respite. With no cooling expected over the coming days, as per the forecast, the city is facing a period of oppressive heat.
