Parts of North India Sizzle as Severe Heatwave Lingers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of a severe severe heatwave in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana for five days. On Monday, Delhi hit a high of 44 degrees Celsius, just a day after recording its highest temperature this season.
The IMD bulletin highlighted the danger of heatwave conditions extending to parts of Rajasthan from Tuesday to Friday. Meanwhile, several areas of Uttar Pradesh will also experience intense heat this week.
Similar conditions are predicted in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and the eastern states. Hill towns like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are also on alert.
Residents of Delhi awoke to sweltering temperatures, with Monday’s minimum crossing the season’s average at 29.2 degrees Celsius. Several places across India shattered the 47-degree mark over the weekend, with Delhi’s Najafgarh area clocking a blistering 47.8 degrees.
Rajasthan and Haryana recorded highs above 46 degrees Celsius in many districts. Punjab faced scorching temperatures as well, with Faridkot logging 44 degrees Celsius.
With the mercury refusing to drop in northern towns and cities still reeling from the relentless sunshine, health experts fear heat illnesses may spike in vulnerable groups like children and the elderly if precautions aren’t taken. The IMD has urged people to take adequate safety measures.
