Sit less, live longer the sitting pandemic: A silent killer

Sitting Too Long? Studies have shown that it may be decreasing your life expectancy.

A recent report appearing in the Journal of the American Heart Association has shown that dallying in the seat might be as risky as access to smoke. This hazard is as much as 30 percent greater than a person engaging in worse activities. The results have caused theorists to reconsider all societal beliefs championing physical activity as all required to counteract the risks of leading a sedentary life.

Even though the physical activities have the well-researched benefits, the evidence demonstrate that those small do not resist the long term unfavorable effects of inactivity. The study’s authors discovered that even in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity, a contributor to earlier mortality was sitting excessively, regardless of the amount of physical activity performed.

“Such a warning should be regarded as a note for everybody – those of us who are spending the great part of the day at the workplace or outside it,” says Dr. Rakesh Gupta, a Senior Consultant of Internal Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. “Sedentary behavior, which refers to any activity in which we are inactive or sitting with low energy usage, can have massive detrimental effects on our health, starting from the very first days we spend in this state.”

This modal but easy activity of ours can cause the binding of lipoprotein lipase to regulate blood sugar and body weight. With more and more people growing accustomed to a sedentary culture in our society, this research believes it is a solemn wake-up call for us to move more and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Now lets think how our habits of sitting have to be reconsidered and making a point that we should ensure daily movement, which our longer, healthesier life, depends on.
