The surprising link between obesity and hair loss

Obesity is linked to hair fall due to hormone imbalance and nutrient deficiencies.

With over half the global population projected to be overweight or facing obesity by 2035, experts highlight its less-known association with hair loss. Trichologist Dr Akshay Batra observes that belly fat elevates the chances of improper insulin functioning, leading to thinning mane.

Vitamin D and B12 insufficiencies prevalent in obese individuals also impact hair quality and density as per Dr. Batra. He explains that IGF-1 promotes hair bulb nutrient supply and prevents loss but may fade without proper insulin action.

Sedentary lifestyles coupled with unhealthy diets cause excess abdominal fat, which causes deficiencies of iron, biotin, and omega-3s. Stress, in turn, induces hormonal imbalances through raised DHT levels, which are responsible for constricting follicles and thinning hair, Dr. Batra elaborates.

Diseases like PCOS and hypothyroidism linked to obesity interfere with hormonal balance and metabolism. Weight gain, especially around the midsection, and increased insulin resistance are PCOS symptoms, while hypothyroidism curbs metabolism – resulting in obesity and hair fall.

While conventional remedies address obesity, Dr. Batra cites homeopathy’s proven efficacy in boosting metabolism and safely reducing fat. Specific remedies tailored to individual health conditions and obesity causes offer possible relief from associated alopecia.
