Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is back in 2024 for all the right reasons. After a five-year hiatus over controversies galore, the iconic brand welcomed its “Angels” to the ramp last night. Models Valentina Sampaio and Alex Consani became the first transgender women to walk the ramp for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, along with such renowned models as Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid.
Gorgeous outfits in black and blue lingerie adorned Sampaio and Consani as they shimmered, playing the roles of Victoria’s Secret Angels. Their emergence has marked a considerable change toward inclusivity after long years of criticism over the brand’s lack of diversity.
This year’s show reflected diversity and body positivity as models of different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities graced the ramps. From Indian model Neelam Kaur Gill to BLACKPINK’s Lisa, who performed during the event, to plus-size model Ashley Graham, inclusivity was the theme on the runway in all ways.
In May, Victoria’s Secret took to social media to declare, “We’ve read the comments and heard you,” announcing that the show is returning. The brand has made it known that the new fashion show would channel modern values while retaining all the glamour, runway, wings, and musical entertainment fans have grown to love.
Historically known for hiring only slim models, Victoria’s Secret has confirmed that the show has been updated to reflect the brand’s values and mission. A Q&A on the brand’s website said the event would be “inclusive” and “centered around celebrating and supporting all women.”
Returning this year after a wave of criticism at the end of the 2010s for a show deemed non-inclusive, this runaway presentation is historic because it diversified representation on the runway- a new standard for the brand.
