Google will reportedly start manufacturing its Pixel range of smartphones in India, as indicated by insiders familiar with the current plans of the company for the South Asian nation, according to the BBC.
The technology giant plans to assemble the handsets at a plant that Foxconn is already operating in Tamil Nadu province, in the south of India.
It will also manufacture drones on its own in the state, which shows that the firm is prospective in the state.
And lately, India has turned out to be the preferred destination for companies looking to diversify their supply chains from China due to tensions with western countries.
To recap, last year in June, Pixel head Rick Osterloh communicated Google’s intent to start manufacturing the Pixel series in India starting with the Pixel 8.
Google said in a blog that India is a priority market for Pixel smartphones, and the company is determined to provide the finest onstage appearance of its built-in software features and the whole body hardware to the people in the country.
Earlier on Friday, sources said that Alphabet’s Google is going to start making the future versions of its premium Pixel smartphones at the Tamil Nadu facility and that manufacturing would commence in the current year.
In line with this, Foxconn has agreed with Google for the manufacturing of the said products, the source added.
As per the company information, Foxconn has two establishments in Tamil Nadu, India, at the present moment. One of the production lines and assembly factories of the multinational is situated in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, India.
After the latest meeting of state officials with the Google upper echelon, the company decided to start manufacturing Pixel phones in Tamil Nadu.
As per a particular report on the regional media houses, the Provincial Secretary of Tamil Nadu is to hold a discussion with the senior officials of Google soon, and they will be meeting the state CM, MK Stalin, soon.
