Google to discontinue Google Pay in the US, focus shifts to wallet

Google Pay Discontinuation won’t Impact India and Singapore Users.

Tech giant Google is discontinuing its Google Pay app in the US from June 4, as part of measures to streamline payment offerings. In a blog post, Google clarified the move will not affect users of Google Pay in India and Singapore, where the platform remains widely adopted.

According to reports, the payment service is utilized by millions in over 180 countries globally. In the US, users can continue accessing popular features like store tap payments via Google Wallet, which sees five times more usage.

The post specified US customers can use the Google Pay app till June 4 to view and transfer balances to their bank accounts. After this date, funds can be viewed and moved from the Google Pay website.

However, by the June 4 deadline, services like sending, requesting, or receiving payments through the app will cease to be available.

Google Wallet, which was rolled out in the US in 2022 after a two-year absence, provides a secure digital wallet for tickets, loyalty cards, and IDs.

In contrast, Google Pay focuses on money management and finances, also supporting credit card transactions via NFC technology. However, the wallet currently lacks this in India.

The move aims to streamline offerings while assuring continuity for Indian and Singapore users. It remains to be seen how this will impact the adoption of Google Wallet internationally.
