Google urges judge to reject epic games’ proposed changes in antitrust battle

Google has filed a request with a San Francisco federal court, urging a U.S. judge not to impose extensive changes to its app store, Play, as proposed by Epic Games in their closely-watched antitrust battle. The clash between the two companies originated from Epic’s claim that Google unlawfully hindered competition by controlling app downloads and in-app transactions on Android devices.

Google’s late filing argues that Epic’s proposed changes would severely impede its ability to compete. In March, Epic asked the court to force Google to simplify app downloads from alternative sources and grant developers more flexibility in offering and pricing in-app purchases. Additionally, Epic requested permission to bring its Epic Games Store to Android without obstacles or delays.

A hearing on the proposed injunction is scheduled for May 23. While Epic has not yet responded to the request, Google’s Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy, Wilson White, stated that Epic’s demands would negatively impact consumer privacy, security, and overall experience.

Google also emphasized that a previous settlement regarding the Play store with states and consumers renders Epic’s bid for an injunction unnecessary, as it adequately addresses the alleged anticompetitive behavior highlighted during the trial. The settlement includes reforms such as increased alternative billing options for in-app purchases. Furthermore, Google is currently involved in another significant antitrust case in Washington, D.C., focusing on its alleged dominance in the mobile web search market.
