IT outage disrupts India as CERT-In warns of Windows crashing

India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) released a significant security note detailing a major IT failure across different systems in the country associated with CrowdStrike, a security solutions company for Windows systems and Microsoft products.

The CERT-In warning explains the effects on Microsoft Windows hosts running the CrowdStrike agent and Falcon Sensor: A recently released CrowdStrike update has allegedly led systems, apps, and associated client devices to BSOD or Blue Screen of Death crashes. This has culminated in many outages and disruptions, especially for systems that rely on Microsoft services.

According to the CERT-In bulletin, SECTRUS received information stating issues of unavailability and crashing with Windows hosts related to CrowdStrike agent Falcon Sensor due to a recently received update in the product.

Concerning the catastrophe, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, MeitY, revealed that it is actively engaging with Microsoft and its associates to deal with this problem. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also took to social media to clarify that the networks used by NIC have not been impacted by the CrowdStrike downtime.

To address such problems, CERT-In has advised Windows users of technical directives. The advisory recommends booting into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment and navigating to C: The malware has copied a file named C-00000291*. Sys from the CrowdStrike directory in C: WindowsSystem32drivers deletes the recovered file before the operating system reboots.

Users are also encouraged to check the CrowdStrike portal for the latest update and verify it so that their systems are safeguarded and protected against future interference.

While the IT community struggles to address the national blackout, operational issues, such as airline services, are affected. Government officials have said that all the relevant measures are being taken to return the situation to normal and to prevent significant interference with the functioning of critical spheres.
