Musk’s X platform draws scrutiny over minors’ online safety

Elon Musk, X’s (former Twitter) CEO and controversial billionaire, recently took to social media to comment on the difference in fighting child exploitation between X and Meta’s Instagram. Despite this, Zuckerberg’s claim has raised many questions from social network users.

Musk’s latest tweet attacked Instagram’s approach to regulating the protection of minors on the platform. “Post your family pics on X! We care& do more to fight child exploitation than any other platform by far,” he tweeted last month, along with an altered image that included a sketch of a strip club behind an Instagram building.

An image uploaded on X referencing the post has attracted over 16 million views. It has been criticized by various users who have been complaining about the numerous pornographic materials found in X. One such user said, “X is porn. It’s in my comments all the time.” They also expressed concern about whether the people whom they see advertising nude content are underage.

Some concerns around the internet have been the use of the internet by children and young people and their safety. However, trying to keep up with the promise of protecting minors, it appears that actual practices are more complicated than anticipated and that the right measures must be developed at a policy level to address concerns adequately.
