Telegram CEO arrested: India considers ban amid investigation

The CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov, has been arrested in Paris, setting off probes into the messaging app in various areas, including India. The Indian government is investigating Telegram for being involved in unlawful activities, including extortion and gambling.

If this inquiry has a negative outcome, then the application may be banned in the country. The official said the cabinet decision will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

The investigation is led by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

As the news of Durov being arrested and subsequent investigation many users have posted messages voicing their concerns about being deprived of using the most popular Instant Messaging Service.

Many people have resorted to posting memes that depict their feelings and or concerns on social networks. One user seriously pointed out that in case of implementing the ban, one cannot ask links, while the other jokingly requested the government to wait until she gets through her MBBS exams.
