Apple, a company with an iconic and innovative technology style, has for years relied on its complex production line in China to produce iPhones and other devices. In recent years, the company has started looking for other markets and could find the Indian market as a new way to expand its production base.
In anticipation of the iPhone 16 series, a viral video from 2019 by Tim Cook has recently gone round social media, with much attention paid to it. Forgetting Apple’s large investment in China for product manufacturing, this viral clip shows Cook doing what he does best.
Dispelling the notion that organizations go to China to take advantage of cheap resources, Cook said,
“In my view, there is a misconception about China; everybody for a long time appeared to think that organizations go to China because of inexpensive human resources, but in fact, China has been a medium to high labor cost country for years now.”
He pointed out that Apple’s products required very high levels of tooling and precision, which he said China was particularly good at its vocational training. ‘The reason is because of the skill, the quantity of the skill within a given region as well as the genre of the particular skill,’ Cook said.
He also added that the sophisticated tooling required for production is of the highest levels, saying, “In the US, if you were to get all the tooling engineers in a room, I am not sure there would be enough people, but in China, you could get a whole stadium filled with them.”
The video posted on the X social networking site has garnered over six million views and led Tesla and SpaceX head Elon Musk to agree with Cook.
