US plans limits on AMD, Nvidia AI chip exports to China, West Asia

This will expand the current export ban on AI chips to more than 40 countries, most of which are in West Asia and Africa.

The Biden administration would keep the AI chips out of the wrong people’s hands, especially in countries with sound surveillance systems.

The Biden administration is said to be considering a major policy change to regulate the export of advanced AI chips designed by companies like NVIDIA and AMD.

czUS authorities will also limit the number of chips sold to those countries for national security purposes. This could forever change the global landscape of AI development.

This new plan, still in its infancy, includes country-by-country ceilings on exports of AI chips, mainly aimed at those countries in the Persian Gulf.

Countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia have developed an insatiable hunger for AI-based data centers, and with their financial brawn, they are prime targets for AI technology.

Now, the problem for the US lies in the fact that such ventures involve some of the biggest Chinese tech companies globally, which have continuously threatened the security apparatus.

This would add to existing export controls, which currently prohibit the exporting of AI chips to more than 40 countries, many of which are on the West Asian and African continents.

These restrictions, targeted primarily at the fast-paced developments of AI in China, now call for the US to consider how the technology could be leveraged in other regions and its broader security implications.
