WhatsApp introduces QR Code chat transfer for seamless device switching

WhatsApp working on a major chat transfer update.

Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that aims to simplify the chat transfer process between devices for users. As per reports, the company is looking to introduce QR code scanning as an option to shift chat history and other data from an old phone to a new device.

At present, backing up chats to a cloud service like Google Drive is necessary before restoring it on a new mobile. However, sources have stated WhatsApp is working on removing this dependency through QR codes.

The new system will allow users to create a code containing chat data on the existing phone. This code can then be scanned using the WhatsApp camera on the new device to automatically fetch and import all messages.

According to credible WhatsApp insider WABetaInfo, traces of the QR code transfer feature were spotted in the beta version 2.24.9.19 for Android. Further, it was understood that both devices need to be connected to the same WiFi network. However, the exact procedure and additional requirements like active internet connectivity are still unclear.

Once rolled out, QR code chat migration is expected to simplify the shifting process substantially. Users will no longer have to rely on cloud backup storage which may be running low on space. The new option could allow seamless on-device data portability.

While this provides a neat solution, some key questions remain unanswered. For instance, how will WhatsApp identify a new device? Also, more details are awaited about the experience and duration of QR transfers. Further beta updates are likely to offer additional clarity on the new migration mechanism in the coming weeks.
