Zuckerberg rejects ‘One True AI’ Vision, Embraces specialized approach

While the public is divided on the use of AI, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent interview showed him less optimistic about the idea of developing a universal AI. Zuckerberg envisions that there will never be a single super AI that will rule the world; instead, there will be many small AIs built for different functions they have to perform.

“I sort of find it a pretty big turnoff when people in the tech industry talk about building this one true AI,” Zuckerberg said, adding that this was something he certainly did not think was the way technology would go.

He noted that there is no one app, one creator, or even one business that people load up asking for repeatedly; it’s the same with the digital economy. He also supposes that instead, there will be various AIs for various purposes, and people will not be driven by a single all-inclusive AI system.

The interview parallels Meta’s statement on the trial of its AI Studio software, which will allow the creation of AI avatars for Instagram. Zuckerberg also talked about the development of Meta’s smart glasses and holographic displays. He said that even displays can create fantastic use cases without smart glasses equipment, including cameras, voice recorders, and AI.

These, he estimates, will work alongside the smartphones, although he does not perceive a situation whereby the smartphone will be fully displaced. It is a refreshing view from Zuckerberg, as it dismisses the idea of a monolithic super AI but a differentiated focus on the specialization of AI.
