In the first agreement of its kind, the UK and US have teamed up to advance safety research of AI to ensure that AI is a force for good instead of evil.
Sealed during the visit of President Biden to the UK, the joint statement declares the goal of countries to move towards solving common problems arising from AI technology through open cooperation and shared experiences implementation.
In this respect, the statement noted the importance and the priority of designing AI systems cautiously; thus, it stated, “Working together for the advancement of AI safety capabilities will help develop public trust and confidence in these technologies.”
Experts acclaimed the accord, underscoring its role in facilitating the joint efforts that will lead to the unification of skills and expertise in a bid to tease out the flaws and look for the principles of equity, monitoring, and transparency in artificial intelligence. Scientists, however, would enjoy increased access to data and computing resources through which new safeguards constraining the prospects of adverse impacts can be created and applied.
A historical memorandum of understanding between the UK and the US was the basis for working teams cooperating for technical assistance and developing international AI safety standards. Through this partnership, an ambitious collaboration between public actors occurs, creating legislative frameworks for development that fit within the democratic system.
Building those clusters together ultimately is meant to nurture even more AI safety-oriented development, bringing about further consequences at the global level. The entire community would benefit if all parties involved worked towards such a goal.
