An Air Canada plane landed at Halifax airport on Saturday in a harrowing incident, skidding down the runway and catching fire after a landing gear malfunction. No casualties have been reported so far.
The accident happened while the landing gear of the plane collapsed, causing the wing to scrape along the runway and catch fire. Fortunately, due to quick intervention by the emergency services, the fire was put under control quickly, and all passengers and crew were evacuated without incident.
A passenger on the flight told about the terrifying moment. She said one of the tires did not come out properly when it landed. “The plane started to tilt about 20 degrees to the left, and we heard a loud sound that resembled a crash as the wing began skidding along the pavement, likely along with the engine,” she said. As a precaution, Halifax airport has been temporarily closed following the incident.
It came just hours after another disaster at Muan International Airport in South Korea where a fire broke out on the landing Boeing 737. Apart from two passengers, everyone succumbed to death. This happened after a Jeju Air flight overshot the runway and crashed into the fence that prompted officials to suspect most of the 181 people aboard had not survived.
