The assault took place on Friday at 3 pm in Singu township in Let Pan Hla village, which is about 65 kilometres north of the second-largest city, Mandalay. A weekend airstrike by Myanmar’s junta on a village in central Myanmar controlled by a pro-democracy resistance camp killed at least 27 citizens and wounded another 30 civilians, an opposition party and Myanmar’s online newspapers reported Saturday.
The attack took place on Friday at 3 p.m. in Let Pan Hla village in Singu township, some 65 kilometres (40 miles) north of Mandalay, the nation’s second-largest city, a spokesperson for the Mandalay People’s Defence Force said.
Myanmar has been shaken since the military took control of the elected Aung San Suu Kyi government on Feb. 1, 2021, with widespread popular resistance. Following that peaceful protests were suppressed with the use of force of life, most of those who opposed rule by the army turned to the use of armed force, and much of the country is in conflict today.
The military regime intensified air raids on the armed pro-democracy People’s Defense Force and ethnic minority guerrilla units that have waged a struggle for more autonomy for decades. The two groups at times conduct simultaneous operations against the army. The resistance fighters have no means to defend themselves against air attacks.
The Mandalay People’s Defence Force (MDY-PDF), which is allied with Myanmar’s primary opposition, took control of the town of Singu in July last year. The group’s statement published on Saturday on its Telegram social media platform stated that six children were among the 27 people killed in the airstrike targeting busy market stalls in Let Pan Hla village.
