Americans Divided on Trump: Poll Shows Policies Favored Over the Man.
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House for a second term, a new poll has revealed a complex picture of American attitudes towards the controversial leader.
The survey, conducted by The New York Times/Ipsos, found that while Americans are more supportive of Trump’s policies than the man himself, they view him more negatively than any other president about to take office in the last 70 years. The data suggests that people are more aligned with the policy positions than the individual.
The poll found that 87% of respondents support deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records, a key Trump campaign promise.
Furthermore, 55% said they favor deporting all undocumented immigrants, while 41% backed ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, another of Trump’s signature issues.
However, the survey also revealed broader concerns among Americans. Most believe the country has neglected pressing domestic problems while becoming entangled in costly foreign conflicts.
A majority of respondents also expressed worry and pessimism about the next four years under a Trump presidency.
Notably, a vast majority (73%) of Americans oppose the idea of Trump pursuing legal action against his political opponents, with 49% strongly opposing such a move. This suggests a reluctance to politicize the justice system.
The poll also found that Americans hold their government in exceptionally low regard, even lower than during the Watergate era. Two-thirds of respondents also believe the economy unfairly favors the wealthy.
Despite these concerns, the majority of Americans expect Trump to follow through on his campaign promises, reflecting a complex dynamic of policy support and personal misgivings.
