The North American esports finals of Apex Legends have been postponed due to hacking allegations. Players shared clips showing how cheat modes were turned on simultaneously with matches, making opponents panic.
The organizers are worried about the competition’s integrity but are not providing any further details. EA, the publisher of Apex Legends, has been contacted for comment. Genburten and ImperialHal, two leading players, uploaded videos of the games in which the cheating was taking place, violating the rules of esports.
Hacks such as wall hacks and aimbots are prohibited and can lead to account bans. The Anti-cheat Police Department, a group of fighting game cheaters, has pointed out that the hackers used a loophole to access machines that belonged to players.
Whether this flaw is in the game or the anti-cheating software is not obvious. Players should not play EAC-compatible games until the problem is fixed. Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), a suspect in the breach, refutes the claim of exploitation of a security hole.
Recently, Apex Legends, a much-loved free-to-play battle royale shooter, celebrated its fifth anniversary. EA cancelled a Star Wars-themed shooter and announced that the layoffs would affect 670 employees.
