Sources have informed BBC Sport that a club-to-club agreement for the Sweden striker is now in place with only minor details remaining to be ironed out. Everyone is pushing for the signing to be finalised in time for Gyokeres to join the Gunners in Asia for their pre-season tour later in the week.
The bid, including add-ons, is an upgrade from Arsenal’s initial offer of 70m euros (£60m). Gyokeres, 27, has already had terms agreed on a five-year contract.
BBC Sport reported earlier in the month how Arsenal had switched their focus to Gyokeres following a stalemate in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.
Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta travelled to Lisbon towards the end of last week to negotiate with Sporting. Over the weekend, Sporting president Frederico Varandas revealed that Gyokeres was under investigation for disciplinary reasons after he failed to report for pre-season training.
The 54-goal striker in 52 games during the previous season has not given any public reason for failing to report for pre-season. Varandas explained to Portuguese news agency Lusa that “no one is above the interests of the club”.
Former Coventry and Brighton striker Gyokeres has netted 97 goals in 102 games over his two campaigns in Portugal, propelling Sporting to two league titles.
