Pakistani influencer faces backlash over sister’s death anniversary vlog.
Pakistani YouTuber Noor Rana has courted controversy by documenting her entire day visiting her deceased sister’s grave anniversary on a vlog. In the over 19-minute clip, Rana narrates preparations, from morning routines to procuring flowers and performing rituals at the grave, getting emotional as she remembers her sister.
However, many have condemned the video as an ‘insensitive exploitation’ of a personal tragedy rather than just sharing the day’s events normally.
Criticism poured in, accusing the influencer of capitalising on the death for commercial gains. Comments poured in, saying such incidents should not be ‘content’ and asking her to draw a line.
A section defended her though, stating daily bloggers share routines and nothing wrong happened at the graveyard per se.
With close to 3000 YouTube subscribers and 19k Instagram followers, Rana’s social media presence attracts both admiration and criticism.
The debate highlights complex considerations around monetizing personal moments of grief or if audiences draw the line themselves over what is appropriate for online sharing.
Policies need to evolve for influencers regarding respect for privacy and boundaries in an otherwise open culture of constant content generation.
