Bangladesh appoints Nobel laureate Yunus to lead interim government

In major political news in Bangladesh, army chief General Waker Uz Zaman said that the interim government headed by the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Muhammad Yunus, will be sworn in tomorrow. This is after the violent removal of the former pro-India Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Speaking to General Waker, the formation of the Interim Government is likely to be sworn in at 8:00 pm. Yunus may chair the advisory council, which has a membership of 15 people. After the shaky ouster of Hasina, Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin swore Yunus, 84 years old, as the head of the interim government.

Meanwhile, the microfinance specialist Yunus, who got Noble for his microfinance bank idea, has to set Bangladesh through a ‘democratic process’ when he returns to his homeland. “He is very eager to do this,“ the general assured his audience, adding that Yunus will be able to lead the country to a better state away from the existing strife.

Yunus said that he is eager to return home and coordinate how the troubles in the country are to be surmounted. He said he is keen to return home and find out more about current social events and how people can chart a way out of the problems they are in now, he told newsmen before departing for Dubai aboard flight Alitalia at Charles de Gaulle airport, Paris, to connect with Dhaka.

Yunus’ appointment followed the insistence of students who asked him to take a leadership role, citing his credit in pulling millions out of poverty in Bangladesh. One of the student leaders, Nahid Islam, disclosed the news, saying that Yunus will be given the title Sardar.

Notably, an appeal has triumphantly freed Yunus of a labor conviction in a Bangladeshi court; this was politically propelled. The interim government was announced following Hasina’s 76 resignation after she had been in power since 2009. Her dismissal was coming after over a month of unrest for a reason that was initially protesting for quota arrangements of government jobs.

This new scenario opens Bangladesh to turning a new page. The world looks forward to Yunus and his leadership, which will take Bangladesh towards democracy.
