Choose Obaidullah Hassan, who was made the Chairman of the Supreme Court last year, who is also partly believed to be a loyalist of the removed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Dhaka:
The Chief Justice of Bangladesh’s top court, Obaidullah Hassan, after protests all around the Supreme Court, has accepted to resign in principle, said Jamuna TV.
The 65-year-old judge will resign after consulting with the president, Mohammed Shahabuddin, as The Dhaka Tribune has informed.
The protests began when Mr. Hassan requested a Supreme Court conclave so that all justices from the two divisions of the Supreme Court could attend. The protesting students considered the holding of the full court meeting as a judiciary coup and threatened to surround the High Court buildings.
Caught by a student demonstration, Chief Justice Hassan put off the meeting and later claimed that he intended to resign.
Hassan, who was appointed last year and perceived as a proxy of the removed PM Sheikh Hasina, was offered an hour to quit. These protests are part of the protest actions that led to the removal of Hasina; their consequences include more than 450 people killed, including dozens of officers.
The police union has down its tools, demanding to go back to work only if their welfare has been guaranteed, making the situation worse.
