Bangladesh Hindus Protest violence, Yunus responds

About 1000 Hindus are stated to have been injured during the depredations on their residences and shops after the toppling of the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5.

New Delhi:

Tens of thousands of Hindus took to the Bangladesh streets to express their dissatisfaction with the continuing attacks on the community after W. Sheikh Hasina W resigned as a prime minister and fled to India.

Hundred thousand people participated in the demonstrations in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, and Chittagong, the second largest city in the country, on Saturday.

The individuals belonging to the minority communities of the violence-prone regions of Bangladesh have been targets of over 205 attacks over 52 districts since the deposition of Ms. Hasina’s government on August 5.

Hindu citizens, their homes, and business places were targeted, and more than 300 are reported to have been injured.

That’s why wanton destruction of property has targeted several Hindu temples, and at least two Hindu leaders belonging to Ms. Hasina’s Awami League party have been killed in the riots.

Indian media also reports that thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus have been in a desperate bid to escape violence and seek asylum in India.

The protesting Hindus armed with banners called for special tribunals that would fast track the trial of those who persecute the minorities, 10 percent parliamentary representation for the minorities, and an act on minority protection, among other restrictions demonstrated at Shahbagh in the central part of Dhaka and blocked traffic for more than three hours.

Ten thousand Muslim protestors, including students, also came out to endorse the protest, supporting the rights of the minorities.

In Chittagong, the rally was organized in Cheragi Pazar Square, a very historical event place in Bangladesh.
