Bangladesh in Turmoil: Hasina alleges US plot, missed power chance

While Bangladesh politics is still transforming due to mass protests, astonishing information emerged about the former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. In an undelivered speech that recently surfaced, Hasina blamed the United States for planning a regime change in the country and ʻmissed an opportunity to stay on.

Prior to her resignation from office on August 5th and her escape to neighboring India, Hasina planned to speak to the nation on the matter. However, the speech, which has been recovered by India Today, gives a glimpse of what the former leader understood of the unfolding situation.

Speaking in an undelivered speech that was published in the Pakistani daily Imroze in October 1981, Hasina reportedly claimed that she could have remained in office had she agreed to “give St. Martin and the Bay of Bengal to America. Suffice it was, Hasina chose to resign to avoid ‘the procession of dead bodies.’ The brutality of military rule was evident throughout the hostile regimes, the autocratic rulers, and oppressive armed forces

Hasina, who had been in power for more than a decade, has stepped down, and the entire country is whore. Some of the students have engaged in violent protests and have moved around attacking the minority Indian community, particularly the Hindus. More than 230 people have died since the overthrow of the government Awami League.

However, it would be important to note that Bangladeshi-American relations were also rather strained during Hasina’s term. Before that, the US had denounced the January 2022 elections that endorsed Hasina’s party, a move that it deemed unfair and, most importantly, not transparent at all.

In the letter, Hasina also explained the opposition to her comments on the “Razakars,” which referred to the individuals who provided support to the military of Pakistan to quash the liberation of Bangladesh. The former Prime Minister assured the protesting students that she had not referred to them as Razakars, stating that what she said had been twisted.

On this high sea of socio-political turmoil, this unrefined speech of Hasina makes the situation far more intense in the volatile political terrain of Bangladesh. With the noted economist Muhammad Yunus sworn in as the head of the caretaker government the political_BEGIN smooching in Bangladesh is set for fresh elections It is anything but a tranquil country that has witnessed a dramatic political change.2
