Bangladesh in turmoil: PM’s son warns forces against takeover

With the citizens of Bangladesh flooding the streets of the country, demanding the resignation of its Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the latter’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has threatened the country’s security forces.

Joy, who also works as an Information and Communications Technology adviser to his mother, has taken to his Facebook page to challenge the Armed Forces of Bangladesh to be faithful to the country’s constitution and not allow any “un-elected government” to take power for even a minute.

”As I said, your task is to protect people, protect your nation, and follow the Constitution,” Joy stated. Does this mean that one should not give any unelected government a chance to govern for even one minute? No, it is your responsibility.

Educating the public on the impending speech of Bangladeshi army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman, a military spokesman, remains reliable. The current demonstrations that started last month regarding the civil service employment quotas have since been termed some of the worst in Hasina’s fifteen-year-stint, and protesters are now calling for Hasina’s ouster at 76 years.

Perhaps even more shockingly, a close aide to Hasina has said that it is not out of the realm of possibility for the Prime Minister to resign, given the current unsustainability of the situation. Nonetheless, the advisor, who was willing to speak only on condition of anonymity, did not elaborate on how it could transpire.

The Bangladeshi scenario can be traced back to the previous time, in January 2007, when the military declared an emergency, followed by a caretaker government for two years due to political turmoil.

On one side of the political confrontation stands the government of Bangladesh, while on the other, the protesters. Depending on what their struggle results in, the future of Bangladesh and its advancement achieved by Joy will be determined. The actions of the guards and the politicians who stand behind them will be the next key to moving forward in this country.
