Sheikh Hasina, 77, has been staying in India since August 5, after she escaped Bangladesh. She had escaped Bangladesh following a mass students’ demonstration that overthrew her ruling party for the past 16 years.
On Tuesday, Bangladesh’s caretaker government reaffirmed its pledge to retrieve deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India if it failed, saying it would seek world pressure if required.
According to the Daily Star, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul told the media that if New Delhi does not comply, the extradition treaty between the two countries will be breached.
Hasina, now 77 years old, fled Bangladesh on August 5 last year after a massive student-led protest overthrowing her Awami League (AL) government, which was in office for 16 years.
For Hasina and several ex-officials, including Ministers of the Cupboard and officials from the country’s military rank, on crimes against humanity and genocide.
Last year, Dhaka sent New Delhi a note asking to extradite Hasina.
“We wrote a letter regarding extradition. Should India not give Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh and send her, it will be a straight violation of the Bangladesh-India treaty of extradition, said Nazrul.
He said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take necessary steps to address the matter within the international community. The law adviser added that the foreign ministry is also making efforts, and a red alert has already been issued.
