On the 11th of September, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the killing of activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi by the Israeli military at the West Bank, terming the act as ‘unacceptable. ’ They urged Israel to take measures to ensure such occurrence would not be repeated.
Eygi was targeted and shot dead by the Israeli forces for participating in a demonstration against Israeli settlers inBeita, a village near Nablus when he was only 26 years old. Israeli authorities have admitted that they are involved, however they claim that her death was not deliberate, On the other hand the attack has cast aspersions on the actions of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
Biden also underlined the issue of complete access, asserting that the U. S. government expects to have access to the investigation of the shooting. “Israel has to do much more that such events like this one should not be repeated in the future. ”
Harris echoed the same sentiments, saying that nobody should die because they were participating in a demonstration. To this effect, Eygi’s family has tried to appeal to Biden and Harris to meet with them and establish an independent process into the matter as they argue that describing the death as an “accident” is unproductive.
Other Democrats, including Senator Patty Murray and Representative Pramila Jayapal, have also called on Biden to request the U.S. investigate the matter. On October 7, the ongoing negotiations among the USA, Egypt, and Qatar to solve the conflict between Hamas and Israel will be one year old.
