Biden to meet Macron in France, discuss trade, Ukraine and other issues
During his visit to France, US President Joe Biden will talk with President Emmanuel Macron on June 8 on various issues, including trade, Ukraine, and NATO, amid pomp and pageantry.
After commemorating the D-Day anniversary together, Biden and his wife, Jill, will participate in the ceremonial welcome in Paris. They will witness a military parade down the iconic Avenue des Champs-Elysees.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan said discussions between the two leaders would center around Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Israel-Palestine conflict, Indo-Pacific cooperation, and other policy matters.
They will announce a plan for maritime law enforcement cooperation between the US Coast Guard and the French Navy. Strengthening NATO is also on their agenda, as both nations remain committed to aiding Ukraine.
However, Biden and Macron are yet to agree on utilizing frozen Russian funds to support Kyiv’s defense. Meanwhile, a US official said G7 allies were making progress on this.
Trade disputes stemming from America’s new subsidy law will likely feature prominently in talks. While it has irked the EU, Washington still resists demands to alter the legislation.
Their interaction assumes significance amid Western efforts to present a united front versus challenges posed by Russia and China.
Bilateral ties have strengthened otherwise under the two leaders, who share a warm rapport and strategic vision despite past differences.
