Biden bids emotional farewell endorses Harris at DNC

President Biden delivers farewell speech at Democratic convention.

President Joe Biden delivered what was seen as a farewell address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In a nearly hour-long speech, Biden touted his tenure while signaling his intention to pass the baton to other leaders.

Joe Biden spoke of persevering through personal adversity and commitment to public service. He praised Vice President Kamala Harris as “tough” and “experienced”, saying selecting her was “the best decision” of his career.

Visibly emotional at times, Biden was introduced by daughter Ashley and Jill Biden, who said she saw him dig deep while deciding to not run for re-election.

While focusing on policy accomplishments, Biden alluded to making way for “a new generation”. Harris and Doug Emhoff embraced Biden and Jill on stage afterward.

Harris had earlier given an unscheduled speech thanking Biden for his “lifetime of service”. Several speakers paid tribute to Biden’s leadership and historic influence.

The farewell address, a few weeks after Biden abandoned re-election plans, positioned Harris as his desired successor ahead of November polls. Biden struck a tone of legacy and passed the torch to future leaders of the party.
