US President Joe Biden has informed the Americans in a televised address that he willingly called off his limp re-election bid in order to preserve democracy in the United States.
Thus, the 81-year-old Mr. Biden stated that he implied his presidential experience and recognized that nothing can prevent the American people from saving democracy.
He claimed that he supported US Vice President Kamala Harris to bring together his fellow Democrats and the country.
This is his first speech to the public after he quit the race on the 21st of July, thereby creating a chance for Ms. Harris to vie for the party’s ticket.
There was mounting pressure on him from his colleagues and donors, questioning if he was physically capable of serving another term after a horrible performance in a debate with the Republican nominee Donald Trump.
What was also missing was an explanation of how his campaign fell apart and that, the longer he digested pressure to end his campaign, it appeared increasingly conceivable for him to lose to Mr. Trump.
He did not also highlight the questions on his frailty and mental prowess issues, which have characterized this race for the past several months.
Possibly, opinion polls so far have indicated a Ms. Harris bounce since she has been systemically taking over Mr. Biden’s campaign, and indeed, if she clinches the nomination, as expected, the race will be between her and the former president.
The president began his address with the words, This is a quote by James A. Garfield; it translates to ‘I honor this office, but with all the respect due and understanding I owe it to my country, my love is with him.’
He addressed the nation for 11 minutes from the oval office, and his wife Jill, son Hunter, and daughter Ashley were in the room alongside a few of the White House staff.
