Biden cautions against US isolationism, lays out poll lead over Trump.
US President Joe Biden questioned whether any country could replace America’s leadership globally, if it retreats under Donald Trump’s vision in the upcoming polls. Addressing supporters in Tampa, he recounted conversations with world leaders at G7/G20 who “genuinely” want his victory, given the high stakes for democracy.
Biden said the “eyes of the world” were on the election’s conduct and outcome. Referring to the Civil Rights era, he highlighted individual duty in shaping democratic processes.
So far, his campaign has raised USD 500 million from 1.6 million donors, over 97% of whom gave less than USD 200, reflecting grassroots support.
Recent national opinion polls put him ahead of Trump, with leads of up to 8 points. “People are beginning to listen,” he noted.
Earlier, Biden interacted warmly with children in the audience, whispering to them and instructing aides to get ice cream later.
The President stressed the importance of continuing public engagement from “the movement” he belongs to, which powered his past White House bid.
Though upbeat about momentum and resources, Biden assumes nothing is guaranteed. Analysts say much rides on maximizing turnout and outreach over the final sprint.
