Canadian voters demand early election amid Trump’s tariff threats

Canadians Demand Snap Election Amid Trump’s Tariff Threats.

In a surprising turn of events, a recent poll has revealed that a staggering 77% of Canadians are calling for an immediate federal election, despite one being scheduled for around October. This clamor for early polls stems from the growing concerns over the looming trade tensions with the United States.

The poll findings come in the wake of outgoing US President Donald Trump‘s decision to sign an executive order, which threatens a 25 percent tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico as early as February 1.

This has sparked a sense of urgency among Canadians, who believe that a new government with a strong mandate is needed to tackle the impending economic challenges.

According to the Ipsos poll, Canadians are seeking a prime minister and government that can provide a strong and decisive response to Trump’s threats.

With 59% of respondents believing that the current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, should be leading the charge, the survey suggests a growing confidence in his ability to navigate these turbulent waters.

Addressing the situation, Trudeau has assured Canadians that his government is prepared to respond “robustly” to any unfair tariffs imposed by the US.

“Everything is on the table. If there are unfair tariffs, we will respond robustly and we will be there to support Canadians and protect our interests,” the Prime Minister stated during a press conference.

The poll also reveals that while three in ten Canadians believe the tariff threats will have little impact on them, the majority (71%) acknowledge the potential economic consequences. This heightened awareness of the impending trade disruptions has further fueled the calls for an immediate federal election.

Interestingly, the survey found a gender divide in the perception of the tariff threat. Men are more likely to view the situation as a bluff, with 63% believing that increased tariffs will have little impact, compared to only 48% of women holding the same opinion.
