Car attack in Mannheim: 1 dead, ‘extreme danger’ alert issued

Casualties are feared when a car collided with a group of people on Monday in Mannheim city in Germany, according to officials.

One fatality occurred with multiple others being injured when a car rammed into a group in the city of Mannheim in western Germany, the Mannheim police announced on Monday. The accident came as people massed in the towns across regions including Germany’s Rhineland for parades to watch the carnival season.

We can now establish that a car was driven into a pedestrian area and that one person was murdered,” police spokesman Stefan Wilhelm stated. Some individuals were lying on the ground and two were being resuscitated, an eyewitness said.

One suspect was taken into custody, Stefan Wilhelm, a Mannheim Police spokesperson, CNN reported. Germany’s federal government declared an “extreme danger” in the city, reporting that the police were carrying out a massive operation. The attack follows weeks after a vehicle ploughed into a group of people in Munich, injuring two dozen individuals. An Afghan asylum seeker, Farhad Noori, was apprehended about the attack.

The assault occurred a day before the Munich Security Conference and just days before the federal elections in the country where there have been immigration and security issues raised, driving the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party into its record second place.

The witnesses, according to a local publication Mannheimer Morden (MM) report, indicated that at least one fatality resulted from the occurrence. The police responded to the scene and blocked bridges along Ludwigshafen. One of the eyewitnesses described seeing a driver strike numerous pedestrians in Planken, the city’s central shopping street where close to 300,000 residents reside.
