China has proposed the possibility of a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss potential means of ending the Russia-Ukraine war that has been ongoing.
Chinese officials have reached out to the Trump administration to arrange for the two leaders to sit down and negotiate and to pursue a potential ceasefire agreement. The report was requested comment on during a regular press briefing by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, who replied there was “no information to provide” on the matter.
This follows Trump’s recent telephone conversation with Putin, during which Trump conveyed that the Russian president informed him he desires an end to the existing bloodshed. Trump later revealed his peace prospects hopes, indicating there was movement with Moscow.
During one-on-one meetings with Putin on Wednesday, both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy allegedly signified that they wanted to make peace. Following the talks, Trump has asked senior U.S. officials to begin negotiations aimed at stopping the conflict in Ukraine.
The Kremlin earlier had signified that Putin was open to a meeting with Trump and called upon him to come to Moscow. Trump then signaled that their meeting would “probably” take place in Saudi Arabia.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said, “China welcomes Russia and the United States to improve communication on a series of international issues,” emphasizing the strength of China and Russia. Guo also added that China believes only dialogue and negotiation can bring an effective solution to the crisis.
China has continually demanded peace talks, arguing that it is not a war party but for the promotion of peaceful resolutions. The West has frequently urged China to employ its close ties with Russia to help bring an end to the war.
