Complacency in security led to breach during Trump assassination attempt, secret service reveals

US Secret Service report flags security lapses in attack on Trump.

Washington: The United States Secret Service has released findings into the breach of protocols during the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July, which identified “deficiencies” allowing the shooter to open fire.

Briefing media, acting director Ronald Rowe said some advance team members were diligent but others displayed “complacency”, resulting in protocol violations.

Key lapses included poor coordination with local police, overdependence on devices dividing information, and acknowledged line-of-sight issues not being addressed.

A crucial call from the security room about the gunman on the roof was not radioed to other agents. Two attendees were injured and one died in the ensuing chaos.

Rowe outlined failures necessitating additional funding, staffing, and gear to shift the Secret Service into readiness instead of just reaction.

Former director Kimberly Cheatle had resigned after the Pennsylvania incident exposing threats to public figures.

Several agents were also placed on leave as investigations began into the security lapses enabling the shooter to target Trump, who narrowly escaped harm.

With a second apparent assassination attempt against the ex-president recently, the new bill passed this week will now upgrade protection for all candidates to presidential levels.

The revised protocols are aimed at addressing current dynamics where threats have tremendously heightened.
