Danish PM ‘shocked’ after being ‘hit’ by man in Copenhagen, one arrested.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reportedly been assaulted by an unknown man in central Copenhagen. Her office stated the PM was ‘shocked’ by the Friday evening incident in Kultorvet square.
While no details were provided, police confirmed one person’s arrest and ongoing investigation. By Saturday, the 39-year-old suspect was presented before a judge to determine custodial remand.
Eyewitnesses told local media that Frederiksen arrived in the area when a man forcefully shoved her shoulder, causing her to lose balance briefly. Security personnel then overpowered the assailant.
Residents mentioned the premier sat at a nearby cafe post the event, visibly stressed. The man aimed to flee but was subdued within moments. His condition afterward was described as confused.
Politicians across Denmark and Europe strongly condemned the assault on Frederiksen, the youngest prime minister at 46. EU Council chief Charles Michel termed it ‘outrageous,’ while Parliament president Roberta Metsola urged her to remain strong.
Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke said such incidents have no place in their ‘beautiful, safe and free’ nation. The episode comes amid a spate of attacks targeting campaigners ahead of this weekend’s crucial EU polls.
Though the motive remains unclear, it has shaken the Scandinavian country. Frederiksen, who won re-election in late 2022, has been leading EU poll campaigns.
