Bamiyan tourist attack death toll rises to 6, foreigners among wounded.
The Taliban government has transported the bodies of 3 Spanish tourists and 3 Afghans killed in a shooting in Bamiyan province to Kabul. Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani said on Saturday that among the 8 injured, 4 were foreigners including an elderly Spanish woman in critical condition.
The death toll rose to 6, including 2 Afghan civilians and a Taliban member. Spain confirmed 3 of its nationals were killed while at least one more was wounded. Hospital sources said the injured were from Norway, Australia, Lithuania and Spain.
Qani said the group was attacked while roaming in the local bazaar, with 7 suspects arrested, including one injured. Investigations are ongoing, he added.
Spanish PM Sanchez mourned the killing of his nationals, as the EU strongly condemned the “murder”.
The Taliban aims to revive tourism despite no embassy support after evacuations and most Western advisories against travel due to security risks.
Over 5,000 foreign tourists visited Afghanistan last year, nevertheless violent attacks continue to endanger lives and interests in the politically volatile nation.
