Dhaka University students protest in solidarity over Kolkata rape case

Students of the well-known Dhaka University in Bangladesh protested in response to ongoing protests catalyzed by the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata in the neighboring country.

The protest mark under the slogan “Awaaz Tolo Nari” (Raise Your Voice, Women) took place on Friday at the Raju Sculpture in Dhaka University, the Dhaka Tribune recalled.

During the protest event, Rahnuma Ahmed Niret from the Department of Physics told the Dhaka Tribune that ‘We know the unfriendly approach of the medical college administration over the rape case in Upper Bengal.’ We are women. The administration should offer the maximum legal support to her, respect the law, and bring quick justice.’.

Anya Fahmin, a student of the Department of Anthropology, added: Women all over the globe are in danger of rape, and we stand with the continuing fight for proportional punishment in the RG Kar Hospital case in Kolkata.

Also, we demand a public trial of the rape and murder case of Sohagi Jahan Tonu of Comilla. The general public has the right to know something, especially when the army is implicated. The government must endeavor to provide a safe nation for women by mobilizing the student bodies.”

Lamisha Jahan, a student from Jahangirnagar University, said: ”Past rape incidents have had those of the victims disclosed to the public, whereas the names of the malefactors go unnamed. Often such cases are hushed up by the government or the ruling party in the country in question. The barbarians are at the gate, and the old ways of doing business are no longer good enough.
