Do crocodiles fake drowning to attract humans? Experts weigh in

According to the viral video, a crocodile is found upside down with its limbs floating in the air over the water’s surface at the point along the Barito River in Borneo, Indonesia.

A video is making rounds among netizens on social media showing a crocodile appearing to fake drowning in order to attract humans within its territory as its prey. While this idea may seem far-fetched at first glance, the possibility of this behavior has captured attention.

According to the viral video, an upside-down crocodile waves its limbs up in the air on the surface of the Barito River, which runs in Borneo, Indonesia. The clip is spoken with a British accent as the crocodile, in what is reported to appear to be fake drowning, beckons victims in unsuspecting human form.

The thought of an animal deliberately taking humans to their deaths is surely frightening, but several experts have countered these reactions to the video, calling them “hysterical” and misinformative.

Casey Holliday, a professor of pathology and anatomical sciences at the University of Missouri, said the idea that a crocodile acts in distress on purpose was “hysterical,” according to the news outlet.

Zoologist Graham Webb described the idea as “complete creative journalism with no factual basis,” as reported by LAD Bible. It is possible the crocodile’s tail was caught, which may have prevented it from swimming properly.
