Egypt and Turkey seek to mend two decades of ties

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had a meeting with the Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu yesterday in Ankara as Egypt and Turkey continue to advance efforts to restore diplomatic relations that were severed in 2013.

Thursday’s visit is the second time Shoukry has visited Turkey in the year, and Cavusoglu visited Egypt in March of the year.

During an unprecedented press briefing with Cavusoglu, the AKP spokesperson said that it is ‘turning diplomacy into a more practical level’, which could imply the appointment of ambassadors in the near future.

For his part, Shoukry did ask Turkey to pull out of Syria its troops, pointing to some of the disagreements that Alexandria formed.

The relations have become strained between two countries after the removal of Mohamed Morsi, the former Egyptian president, in the 2013 coup.
