Elon Musk’s controversial gesture at Trump inauguration rally

Controversy Erupts Over Elon Musk’s Gesture at Trump Inauguration Rally.

Washington, D.C.: The typically outspoken Elon Musk found himself at the center of a heated debate after a controversial gesture he made during a rally for President Donald Trump‘s second inauguration.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO first tapped the left side of his chest with his right hand, and then extended his arm with his palm open, repeating the motion multiple times.

Claire Aubin, a historian who specializes in Nazism within the United States, was quick to weigh in, stating that Musk’s gesture was a “sieg heil,” or the infamous Nazi salute.

“My professional opinion is that you’re all right, you should believe your eyes,” Aubin posted on social media, aligning with those who saw the gesture as an overt reference to the Third Reich.

However, Musk was not amused by the accusations, firing back on social media. “The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is so tired,” he wrote, dismissing the criticisms as “better dirty tricks” from his opponents.

Not everyone agreed with the Nazi salute interpretation, though. The Anti-Defamation League, an organization founded to combat anti-Semitism, defended Musk, stating that “it seems that Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.”

Another historian, Aaron Astor, also rejected the notion that Musk was emulating the Nazis. “This is a socially awkward autistic man’s wave to the crowd where he says ‘My heart goes out to you,'” Astor wrote on social media, alluding to Musk’s previous disclosure of being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism.

One attendee at the rally, Brandon Galambos, a 29-year-old pastor and tech worker, suggested that Musk’s gesture was intended as a joke. “He’s very humorous, and he uses a lot of sarcasm. So when he did that on the stage, I don’t think he meant it,” Galambos told AFP.
