Escalating border tensions as Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk on alert

During the fighting in Ukraine’s ground operation in Russia’s border territories, the situation in the Belgorod and Kursk regions is at the decisive phase. These authorities have come up with new evacuation notices and advisories associated with the increasing possibility of attacks by Ukrainian forces.

Belgorod’s region governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has ordered a new round of evacuations for the Krasnaya Yaruga area because of expectations of a new Ukrainian attack. In the neighboring Kursk region, the head of Belovsky district, Nikolai Volobuyev, has called on people to evacuate the area “on their own,” saying, “The situation is very tense. ”

The Russian Ministry of Defence has said that its forces have engaged and brought down several drones in the affected areas. The ministry claimed that during the night time, five of its drones were shot down in Belgorod, eleven in Kursk, and two in Voronezh.

The conflict has also grown fiercer at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – the largest in Europe and one occupied by the Russians in Ukraine. Each side has accused the other of setting a fire at the plant’s grounds, although none of the parties claim an increased radiation level.

The cease-fire is fragile, tensions in the border areas stay high, developments concerning the Zaporizhzhia plant hint at potential prospects and problems there, and the Ukrainian ground attack keeps modulating the balance of the fighting.
